In a "Signing Statement", the President claims Executive Power to search the mail of U.S. citizens inside the United States without a warrant, in direct contradiction of the bill he had just signed. Bush says feds can open mail without warrant 04 Jan 2007 President [sic] Bush quietly has claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant. Bush asserted the new authority Dec. 20 after signing legislation that overhauls some postal regulations. He then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open mail under emergency conditions, contrary to existing law and contradicting the bill he had just signed, according to experts who have reviewed it. Reporter held in contempt for anthrax case 08 Mar 2008 federal judge has ordered a former USA TODAY reporter to begin paying fines of up to $5,000 per day after finding her in contempt of court for failing to identify sources who named former Army scientist Steven Hatfill as a possible suspect in the 2001 [Fort Detrick] anthrax attacks. The decision late Friday night by U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton also requires Toni Locy -- not her former employer or others -- to pay the fines as long as she refuses to identify her sources.
